He was only a child

It should be immediately apparent to anyone reading this post that writing poetry is not really my thing… I honestly can’t remember the last time I tried it!! This one was inspired last week, as I was watching a small child playing with a plastic toy rifle.

He was only a child.
He didn’t understand.
How could he?
He thought it was a game.
He was only a child.

He was only a child.
He signed up straight away.
They told him,
That now he’d see the world.
He was only a child.

He was only a child.
They taught him how to fight.
They trained him.
He thought it was great fun.
He was only a child.

He was only a child.
They gave him a rifle.
The bolt clicked.
He giggled at the sound.
He was only a child.

He was only a child.
They sent him to the front.
He was lost.
He never stood a chance.
He was only a child.
